We had heard mixed reviews about this place but really wanted somewhere that served buffalo. My husband had the buffalo meatloaf and I had the prime rib. The wait staff was excellent from the time we walked in the door to the time we ordered dessert to go. They were fast, friendly and professional. Our server was great, very helpful since it was our first time. Food was great and very tasty.

Came here the other night for dinner and everything was amazing! I had the best prime rib! Washed it down with a tall blue moon! Will be back!!

I find it harder and harder to get quality food at a decent price. GW Hunters does not disappoint! Great service and great food.

Horrible horrible food! Way overpriced for what we got ! Rice pilaf was just white rice with carrot shavings, ribeye came cold, asked them to take it back and they totally nuked it! Gross!! 18.00 plate turned into garbage!! Baked potato is wouldn't was at least a week old!! Manager finally after talking to him took off my steak charge.... I highly recommend you do not eat here!!! The beer was delicious though. And our waitress was very apologetic and very nice!!

This used to be a favorite for my wife and I. Recent changes are all taking it the wrong direction. Slow service and inconsistent quality are our concerns. They deserve another chance, but I don't like gambling on whether or not the meal will be enjoyable.

Elk sausage for breakfast? Awesome! This place is clean and friendly, and the service is excellent. The prices are pretty reasonable. And did I mention the elk sausage? It was delicious! This is my new favorite! I can't WAIT to bring the family back to try the dinner menu! I read a one-star review that complained about the trophy animals. Really? Haha! First, the name is Hunters, helloooo! And second i can't WAIT to show my kids! Wow!

I used to love this place however it has completely went down hill... I ordered the Cajun shrimp pasta to go, when my husband came home I opened up the box to find only mashed potatoes and carrots and a very small box leaking everywhere with maybe 2 shrimp and some sauce, no pasta to be found, so my husband had to drive back to the restaurant and get the dish the way it was supposed to be, he finally gets home to eat his now cold chicken fried steak and finds they gave him curly fries instead of mashed potatoes, my garlic toast was just set on top if the very wet sauce making it a soggy disgusting mess the "Cajun" dish tasted like pure salt, no spice, the worst meal ever! Way overpriced for the garbage they call food. I will not be returning. Very unfortunate considering the quality it once had...

Three of us eat here last night and I was not impressed with this place at all. Especially for the price of our meal. We started with the alligator for the appetizer. It was overcooked and dried to the point of not really tasting like anything other than old shoe leather. I got a couple of bites where I could tell i was eating something that may not have simply been burnt chicken. I got the Buffalo meatloaf (something my stomach is currently still upset about). There were only 2 flavors that I could tasty in the meatloaf. The mushroom gravy and GARLIC! I wish I could type GARLIC in a larger font to indicate how much friggin GARLIC was in this meatloaf. With such intense flavors I wasn't able to taste the actual meat part of the meatloaf at all. Very disappointing. I also got the roasted red potatoes on the side which were very dry. The other 2 in my party got the 8oz. elk steak. I twas VERY tough. I took a couple bites and had to put some serious effort into chewing it. Just not worth the money spent on it. After all our meals and our appetizers fell very short of the mark, it seems clear that they simply don't put much effort into cooking the food here. I really wouldn't recommend it to anyone. The poorly cooked food is simply not worth the high prices.

We really enjoyed our breakfast here. The 8oz steak and eggs for $8.99 was a great tasting deal. My son got the chicken fried elk steak, and enjoyed it very much. I liked the potatoes toast and coffee also, no complaints here.

A great place to eat in North Idaho. This place is a classic home cooked diner, but with one kick, their steaks are way above average and very tasty! Also their elk burger is the best I have ever eaten. Their breakfast is typical fare with plenty of fattening items to select from. Their steak and eggs are very popular. They have plenty of selections of burgers and sandwiches for lunch all priced veryreasonable. For whatever reason they are closed on Monday's and Tuesday's so keep that in mind if you are gonna dine here.

For 14 years prior to new ownership this was our go to breakfast spot. Always consistent, good food and great service. Since new ownership we have only eaten here half a dozen times and I am sorry to say it has only been marginal at best. The servers do seem helpful and try to make the experience as good as possible, but they have to apologize a lot. Our last meal yesterday, I ordered my usual chicken fried steak and requested it extra crispy as on two of the last six visits mine was mushy. I also ordered the country potatoes with peppers and onions. I also ordered a biscuit instead of toast. I also ordered my normal tomato juice. The waitress (who was new) said she did not know if they had tomato juice. I told her I had ordered it for 14 years. My juice was brought out and I took a drink. I noticed a tangy taste. I figured it might be just a first taste thing and took another drink and it still had the tangy taste like it had sat in can so long it was turning. I had our server take it from the table. Our food was delivered to the table and the debacle started. Cutting the biscuit in half it was mushy in the inside. I told our server to please replace it. The owner brought a new biscuit and said he toasted it under a broiler and it was still not done as in the past and tasted like c--p. I had to ask for butter and jam for it. Since new ownership you always have to ask for jam. I have since come to find out on yelp they have changed the biscuit recipe. Changed it for the worse. Needless to say the rest of my breakfast was not to my expectations. The plate came out lukewarm, chicken fried mushy, potatoes under cooked, and the onions semi raw. At least the sunny side up eggs were decent as well as the coffee to swill some of what I ate down. I am sure, but the fact there are so many group on coupons for the restaurant they notice as well as I see the dwindling patronage.Needless to say we will not be back

When we first arrived there was no one there to greet us, another family was sitting on the bench so I assumed we had to wait to be seated, and then finally found the sign stating as much half hidden behind and animal head. It took about five minutes for a gal to come out and ask if we had been helped yet-this should have been my first clue how the evening would pan out. It was obvious that they were full, and so our 15 minute or so wait wasn't unexpected, the gentleman who showed us to our table was nice but was obviously busy and didn't have much time to spend at our table. My husband got the 8 oz. steak, and I got the Bigfoot burger while my seven yr old got the clam chowder. 30-40 mins after ordering we got one bowl of soup, 10-15 minutes after that we got the rest of the food. I watched other tables have the same issue, where some of the people would get their food while others had to sit and watch their friends/family eat for 15 or so minutes before their food came out. I am just not used to this and seemed like poor organization on the kitchen's part. When we got our food it wasn't bad, the chowder was good, the bacon on my burger was perfect and the fries were tasty. I was disapointed by my husband's plate, I guess I just expected more for $18, it was nothing to write home about. Over all the food was pretty good but they didn't seem to know how to handle a a full restaurant or were under staffed. On the plus side they took $10 off our bill and when we asked about it the new waitress waiting on us didn't know why but that the owner did it. My guess would be that he saw how long we had to wait with a very hungry seven year old. I was impressed by that and it was much appreciated.

My husband and I stopped for breakfast. It was our first visit. When walking in I noticed a sign outside that read "Excellent Service". I was wondering how true it was. We got seated right away. They were pretty busy for a Sunday morning around 9:30am. The guy who sat us asked if we wanted water and coffee? He went off to get it while another lady came right behind him with waters. We told her that he was getting our drinks so she left. She must have cancelled my husband's coffee because he didn't get it. After about 5 minutes our waitress came over. She was not very personable, didn't chat us up at all, didn't smile, didn't tell us about the specials, nothing. Took our order and walked away. I know they were busy but they had plenty of staff working, she could at least smile and say hi. A runner delivered our food (I noticed that our waitress had others deliver her food orders, we were near the food pass so we could hear her orders getting called. Other waitresses ran most of their orders). My husband ordered the elk skillet and said it was very good. He was a bit hungover so he didn't finish it but said the bland potatoes helped on his stomach. The potatoes were good, just need some seasoning, even just some salt and pepper would be good. Otherwise they were good, not greasy at all. I had the ham with eggs. My ham was cold. Since we hadn't seen our waitress since we placed our order, I stopped someone who looked like a manager. He apologized and replaced my ham. We had one more gentleman come by and ask how things were. He was some type of management. He came by right after the problem with the ham. No one else came by to check on us or to refill our drinks. Our waitress finally came by and gave us our check and said she'd be our cashier. Our credit card and check sat on the edge of the table for about 10 minutes before the manager came by and processed it. Never saw the waitress again. No one thanked us for coming in when we left. Amy you might get better tips if you were more personable.

I go here for breakfast and lunch a lot. They don't do anything small, and they don't skimp on the quality either. Everything I've ordered has been great tasting. The bacon they use is outstanding, so get something with bacon, like the club sandwich. With breakfast, they serve seasoned potatoes instead of hashbrowns, and I consider that a total bummer. the inside is all done up like a northwoods cabin with taxidermied animals from around the NW region. Kids either love it, or get freightend by that. They have a friendly staff, and it's a family friendly place, which means that I, and my dumb friend I always go with, try to keep it down and chill on the swear words.

My father and I stopped in for lunch on a Friday afternoon. He had a breakfast plate and was happy with his food, mine on the other hand was a different matter. I ordered the "Bistro tender steak", whatever that is, and was "guaranteed tender". The flavor of the steak was good, but unfortunately it was chewy. I'm not exactly sure how to describe it, it wasn't exactly tough, but there wasn't a single bite that didn't require more than an average amount of chewing to get it down. I got through about half the steak, with a couple of inedible pieces set aside on the plate, and the second half of the steak was way less than medium, not even medium-rare, very rare. At at that point I gave up and asked for a biscuit with sausage gravy. The biscuit and gravy were tasty, except there was a chunk of biscuit that was rock hard, it seemed like maybe it had been microwaved too long. Overall, it was a very disappointing meal and not worth the 30 minute drive from Spokane. Bad food makes me sad. :(

Ugh! We have wanted to come here for 5 years....should have waited. Meatball sub was like eating a pound of sugar. Unbearably sweet! My husband had the buffalo meatloaf .... Bland! No flavor at all. And the garlic mashed potatoes - they forgot the garlic? However, the tomato bisque soup was good and flavorful. Sorry, but we won't be coming back. Big let down!

Being newcomers to the area it only seemed authentic to give GW's a try since it boasts wild game on the menu. The husband had his standby chicken fried steak which he said was tasty and bigger than usual. I had an elk sausage & veggie omelet which hit the button. Overall, decent food, courteous service, reasonable prices...just didn't rock my world. Oh, and the seats were incredibly uncomfortable. However, it may rock the world of someone who enjoys having dead stuffed animals staring at them while they are eating... a hunter's dream. We since have gone for dinner, where we tried the appetizer sample, prime rib, and a snapper special. My husband said his steak was awesome; my snapper was greasy and underwhelming. The soup and salad were delicious. We had an amazing cappucino cheesecake for dessert and left feeling stuffed. We also left with empty pockets though too. Their dinner prices are rock your pocket prices. We left $70 lighter for a diner-like atmosphere with screaming children and servers who share too much personal information with neighboring customers. Our conclusion? We'll stick to GWs for their affordable, yummy breakfast!

The only reason why I gave this a 3 star is, I ordered the all-you-can eat shrimp and fries and the kitchen staff would only send put 3 shrimps at a time on the plates.

I went back here after getting a Groupon, and hadn't really tried their dinner for a long time. I HAVE BEEN MISSING OUT!!! Great food. Their elk burger was the best burger I have had in my entire life. The service was outstanding. I believe our server was Lori, and she was delightful and had a great time with us. She had our food timed just right so that we didn't have our burgers delivered as soon as we got our appetizer. By the way, the duck for an appetizer is amazing!!! I highly suggest this place for dinner!!! I've been dreaming of that burger ever since...

4 of us out for a bite. Hubby had Captians plate it was just ok. Daughter had steak oscar it was sub par. Friend had Buffalo Steak was tough. I had Chicken Oscar it was by far the worst sauce I have ever tasted! The chicken was old, the asparagus was HUGE the suace was transparent. I almost vomited after taking one bite! I sent it back and ordered shrip tempura and got coconut shirmp. They sent a dipping sauce that was coconut milk sweetened. By this time my appetite was gone! The manager was very nice comp'd my meal and gave me a desert to take home which was bread pudding. The bread pudding was AWFUL! we spent 75.00 for the four of us and I will NEVER ever go back. I live in Post Falls and will not return BEWARE! The service was ok the poor gal was running her tail off!

Walking in G. W. Hunters reminded us of the Ace Ventura movie where Tim Carrey looks around and says "What a lovely room of Death." My wife, was visibly taken aback at these 'trophies' on the wall and while I would not decorate a restaurant with them they did not really bother me. We were having lunch with some friends who live in post falls, they first wanted to go to "The White House", which we respectfully declined. (see my review for the reason) Well they said 'the second best place was G.W. Hunters' it was then that we knew we might be in trouble. First of all they are $$ expensive $$ for coffee shop food that features an array of elk / buffalo / duck entrees. However, keeping an open mind we ordered, my wife had the lunch special a grilled prime rib sandwich for $12.99. What came out was a paper thin sliced of overcooked / burnt on the grill prime rib, it was placed on a piece of sourdough bread and au jus had been sprinkled on top of it. If we had purchased the meal by the pound it would have been over $30.00. I tried the elk burger since our friends highly recommended it. Elk like buffalo are both lean meats and should be cooked slowly so as to not dry them out. This was not the case it was grilled over high heat and ended up dry, chewy and tasteless. Our friends raved about the food while we picked at ours and made polite conversation. Without trying to be rude or demean people, but I have found that people who have lived in this area their whole lives rave about these types of places. This is the quality of food that was served 30-40 years ago and many places in Spokane/Post Falls/CDA have not evolved with the times. If this was the 1970's G.W. Hunters WOULD be a top notch diner/coffee shop, the difference is that it is 2008 and the culinary express has passed these people by. Janessa asks a good question: "Steven--if the food was THAT BAD, why didn't you SEND IT BACK?" The reason we did not send it back was the food that they served us was representative of their quality. My friend also ordered the elk burger and his came out the exact same as mine. We saw a prime rib sandwich delivered to another table before we got ours and it looked to be the exact same as the one my wife received. If a restaurant makes a mistake I will always send the plate back, looking at the other plates that were served there, it appeared to me that we had received their standard of food quality and the plates were not mistakes, just a result of very low standards and/or a combination of ignorance about cooking. Sending it back would have done very little except to possibly embarrass our friends and make them feel uncomfortable.

I have been to GW's 3 times now. Each time is just like the first--a short wait (for breakfast for 2) followed by decent service and unique food. The first time we went was for a special dinner for my hunter boyfriend. I made reservations since it was a Saturday night and we got in without a problem. We ordered alligator as an appetizer since neither of us had tried it before. It was ok, but so battered and fried that it was hard to tell what it actually tasted like. For entrees he got the elk rib special, and I got rainbow trout. Everything was a bit drowned in sauces, killing the organic taste of the food, but it was good nonetheless. I really prefer them for breakfast, though. They serve it until 3 and it's much more of a bargain. I always get the smoked salmon omlette, although it seems like they use some fake cheese in it like Kraft singles, which kills it. After 3 trips I'm in no big hurry to go back, but I like that their food is unique. Steven--if the food was THAT BAD, why didn't you SEND IT BACK?

Getting off from Northern California and into a place right off the freeway I ended it here. I am in no way your typical Eastern Washington/Norther Idaho diner but I m adventurous with food. I was greeted warmly and was seated immediately, and the waitress came for my drink quickly. I wasn't starving yet so I had the Elk burger with potato salad, they really should tell people like myself what to prepare for when ordering elk, given I had eaten buffalo, ostrich, bison before elk was different in that it was really lean, a little gamy but not too much. The meat was cooked to medium which surprised me but I would venture to say that if it was cooked thoroughly the burger would be too dry. When I ordered the burger they asked if I wanted cheese on it, I said yes but they didn't give me a list of cheese which to choose from, they just gave me what I remember was swiss, the potato salad was nothing to write about at all bland salad that was truly someone's after-thought. Kind of expensive burger for this part of the country but where else can you find Elk between the buns?

The food here was okay but it wasnt the best thats for sure. It was kid friendly and the kiddos food looked good but mine wasn't amazing. I gave it 3 stars because I was sat right away, they were polite courteous and quick with the food getting out.

Yuck! Had breakfast here since it changed ownership twice now..I ordered eggs Benedict and my hollandaise sauce tasted and looked like curdled mayo! I asked them to take it since it was in edible. The owner came out and personally apologized saying that his chefs didn't realize they couldn't let a cream sauce sit on the stove..came back a second time to see if we had bad luck..nope! Food was lukewarm, portions are massive, and service is terrible!! Maybe lunch and dinner are better, but I personally would never recommend this place to anyone!! Lots of places that have better food and you won't have to sit under a giant moose head that drops hair into your food!

I wish I had read more reviews rather than relying on the star rating alone today. If just one person avoids coming here because of this review I will consider my experience at least useful. I rarely rate a meal, and have rated more meals I have loved than not...but this is necessary because the rating is completely wrong. I agree with the person who wrote one step up from Perkins or Dennys...but maybe not even a full step up if at all. The prices are commensurate with much better steak restaurants without the quality of food. I ordered the calamari appetizer...weird, bland, and not like any calamari I have ever had. The New York steak was super tough, and would be the quality I would expect if it was $5.99 for the meal. My first baked potato was raw in the center. Second one was a little better, but not 100%. I know this will sound all wine snobby of me, but serving wine in a water goblet isn't ideal. Not good. The highlight, which wasn't much of one, was the green salad. It was decent and so were the veggies on the side of my steak. I believe bread was supposed to be served with the meal, but it wasn't. I'm sure it wouldn't have been worth the carbs. My Mom's New York was also really tough, so it wasn't just bad luck on the steak I received. The service is very good, the restaurant is ok from a looks perspective if you like "outdoorsy". They need to really consider their choices in quality or they aren't going to make it. It just wasn't good. Avoid would be my recommendation.

Nothing but 5 stars. Amazing food. Great service! The chili burger was huge and delicious! Topped it off with creme brûlée and coffee. Absolutely perfect. They also have tons of gluten free bread and pasta to satisfy everyone. Will definitely be coming back for breakfast!

  • BRANDY S.

Hmmm, where to start... Pros: The waitress was nice The fries were good The portions were fairly large Cons: My burger was burned (but they were nice enough to hide it under the cheese so I could be surprised!!!) The calamari appetizer was strangely super bland and fishy at the same time My daughters food was overly chewy, at least I think it was...never eaten frog legs before Our poor waitress was new and got in trouble for trying to use the Groupon we had- she didn't know that because my daughters frog legs were an appetizer we couldn't use it even though she ordered them as her meal and there was no frog leg entree option, so we ordered food we wouldn't have had we known, the waitress got in trouble, and I spent double what I expected to spend since I couldn't use my now worthless groupon (I won't be going back) the other issue was that I ordered something off the specials menu (I did mention the groupon at the beginning so if she had been properly trained I'm sure she would have told me, I could have just paid full menu price and used the groupon too if they wanted to be fair) So nice waitress, mediocre everything else

  • Erin S.

I rarely venture here anymore for a few reasons, but mainly it has come down to the actions of new management. The food has become a step-up from a Denny's or a Perkins (very sad state), but you'll end up paying twice the price. The service is now just as lackluster as the food. The reliable and fabulous servers have now left and replaced with ones that are too concerned with socializing with each other and find their customers an inconvenience. So, save your money and venture somewhere else.

Excellent food. Wonderful service. It's like eating at a hunters lodge. Hence... The name fits. Onion soup was great. Prime rib perfect. Ice cold salad. Soft rolls. Other foods I saw folks eating looked terrific to. Will be back for sure.

  • Kevin K.

A bit disappointed. We were anticipating a more flavorful meal. I had BBQ ribs. My wife had Elk fingers appetizer. Ribs were bland. Well cooked, but common sauce. The finger steaks were pre-fab and tasteless. Obviously frozen and deep fried in old oil. Food is 1-2 stars Service was good. 4 star. The atmosphere was cool. 3-4 stars.

WOW!!! Sunday they have Elk Noodle soup, get it! Don't get fries, salad or any goofy stuff as a side, just order the soup! You will thank me! The Elk burger (lunch ) was perfect! The wonderful elk flavor was what my taste buds needed. My daughter got the grinder with elk, beef and pork meatballs it's flipping great. Really tastey! The best was my wife's choice, buffalo meatloaf sandwich! Holy cats was this one of the best sandwiches I have ever had! This was amazing ! Wow!

After a long break from Hunters due to bad service and poor quality cuisine we decided to venture into the resturaunt to determine if we would notice any improvements since our visit last year. The wood grain, taxidermy, wild game decor is still standing tall--it's been 10 years I have been in this place and not a damn thing has changed. The floors are clean, tables well kept and food was acceptable. My inlaws had the elk chicken-fried steak and we had the standard chicken-fried steak for breakfast. The portions are still large and you can easily split the plate for budget conscious folks. Service was friendly and prompt, coffee was hot and our cups never ran dry. The food came out looking like it has for the last 10 years. As far as breakfast is concerned I would be brave enough to say that Hunters has improved from its sketchy service and tasteless fare from last years change in ownership. I am anxious to visit for dinner service, especially the prime rib and BBQ ribs as these have both been family budget friendly favorites for years.

We recently had dinner here for my husband's birthday. We both ordered the buffalo burgers because, well, yum! Unfortunately our server had absolutely no personality. She didn't even a fake a friendly smile. Now, I ordered my burger medium-well and my husband ordered his medium-rare (gross, I know). Not only did it take forever to actually get our food, but when the server handed me my "medium-well" burger, it was the wrong one. This isn't something I realized right away. I was forced to eat quickly because I had a fussy newborn to feed, so imagine my surprise when I took a huge bite of the undercooked burger that was placed in front of me. I was so disgusted that I couldn't eat the correct burger when my husband and I traded. Luckily the fries were good.. and I had some peanut butter crackers in the diaper bag. Certainly not the dinner I expected to have. I give it 2 stars because I have had better food here in the past, but the food and service both seem to be on a steady decline. I won't be returning for a while.

George is great and I love 30% off Tuesday for locals and $9 Burger and Brew Wed. Had the Angel Hair Pasta Cajun Shrimp and it was fresh, creamy, just the right spicyness.

Came for dinner and the Elk steak was Devine . I love restaurants where the owner is on the premises and George is always in attendance . All the food here is fresh and well prepared . Service is attentive, Lori Ann was helpful and knowledgeable. I hate chain restaurants and look for local places like this. When in North Idaho stop by here.

Good food but poor service, waited at the front for a while before we were acknowledged and seated. Then had a hair on my fries and sent my plate back, the waitress just made a joke about no hairs when she brought my plate back, no apology or discount given.

GW Hunters is the best restaurant in Post Falls. I eat the chicken Cobb salad every time. My husband has something different every time. Steak sandwich , meatloaf sandwich, eggs Benedict ect. Yummy food and 30% off for locals every Tuesday off to lunch there now

We had a nice lunch for a group of eleven and the food was good American style with local wild game incorporated (ex. I had the elk burger, my wife had the yak burger and buffalo meatloaf was also on the menu) and the service was fantastic! The burger I had was cooked as ordered and the potato salad was very good as well (mayo based for potato salad experts). I had a cup of clam chowder and was surprised that it was as good as it was since we were nowhere near the ocean. The ambiance of the restaurant is that of a hunting lodge and the kids loved it. We took pictures of them with bison, elk and moose. We will definitely be back and recommend this to other families.
